Description
Experience the beauty and history of the Cache la Poudre River on this two-hour guided walking tour through Fort Collins. The tour circles Rigden Reservoir and explores the downstream section of the Poudre, where history, geography, and human settlement intertwine.
Long before Fort Collins was founded, the river served as a lifeline for wildlife, Indigenous peoples, and early explorers. Known to the Arapaho as the *jáaianahâw*, the Poudre appeared on maps after Major Stephen H. Long’s 1820 expedition. By 1835, French trappers had named it “Cache la Poudre,” meaning “hide the powder,” a nod to frontier lore that endures today.
Along the trail, your historian guide reveals how the Poudre shaped the development of northern Colorado—from early exploration and settlement to irrigation, agriculture, and community building. Stories span from the 1820s through the 1870s, bringing to life the diverse peoples who depended on this vital river.
Covering about two miles on mostly flat trails, the tour blends scenic beauty with insightful storytelling, offering guests a deeper appreciation for Colorado’s oldest National Heritage Area and its lasting legacy.
