Dry Tortugas National Park
Fort Jefferson, Coral Reefs & Remote Island Adventure
Fort Jefferson, Coral Reefs & Remote Island Adventure
Est. 1992
Dry Tortugas National Park is one of America’s most secluded treasures — a chain of seven small islands rising from the Gulf of Mexico, about 70 miles west of Key West.
Accessible only by ferry or seaplane, this tropical marine park perfectly blends living coral reefs, crystal waters, and 19th-century history into one unforgettable experience. At its heart stands Fort Jefferson, one of the largest masonry forts ever built, a massive guardian of the Florida Straits surrounded by turquoise shallows and white sand beaches.
Visitors come here to snorkel among colorful fish, wander sun-baked ramparts, and disconnect entirely from the modern world.
The isolation is part of the magic — no roads, no restaurants, no cell towers — just open sea, seabirds, and sky. Whether you’re arriving for the day or camping overnight beneath the stars, the Dry Tortugas feel like stepping into a postcard of pure tranquility.
Reaching Dry Tortugas is an adventure in itself — most visitors explore via full-day ferry trips or private charters from Key West. Guided experiences add insight into the fort’s past, the region’s marine life, and the fragile ecosystems that thrive beneath the waves.

Its Role In US History
Visit & Explore This Remote Outpost
The gateway to Dry Tortugas is unlike any other — Key West, the last island on the Overseas Highway, where pastel homes meet turquoise water. This vibrant coastal city is where every trip to the park begins, with ferries, seaplanes, and charters departing daily. Before or after your voyage, Key West invites you to slow down, explore its historic streets, and savor sunsets that rival any in the world.
The southernmost city in the continental U.S., Key West is where your Dry Tortugas journey begins. Walk along Duval Street, visit the Ernest Hemingway Home, and watch the sunset from Mallory Square. This island city offers a blend of colorful Caribbean culture, art galleries, and harbors filled with boats headed for adventure. Stay a night or two before your voyage to enjoy reef dives, museums, and Key West’s legendary hospitality.
Just a few miles east of Key West, Stock Island offers quieter marinas and local character. Many private charters depart from here, giving travelers a more relaxed start to their journey.
The snorkeling was incredible — crystal clear water and schools of tropical fish right off the beach.
